On May 1st, during the FNV Union’s annual Labour Day manifestation, Merel and Studio Detour were invited to create an installation exploring the “Union of the Future.” They asked a simple yet urgent question: What needs to have changed 25 years from now?
Imagine this: it’s May 1st, 2050. What do you think should have changed in the work you’re doing now?
This space is an invitation to pause and reflect on what’s really happening in the workplace. And if you’re not currently working, there are probably still things you’d like to see change.
The banners display questions meant to spark reflection: about your own work, the work you’ve done for years, or the work you’re looking for. About what works well, what fails, and where there’s room for change.
Because good working conditions are not a given. They’re something we have to fight for—every single day. The working conditions we know today are not the end point—they are the result of years of struggle. And we’re not there yet.
Time to reflect!
Take a seat and take a moment to write down what you hope will have changed 25 years from now.
What should finally be in place by then?
What must never return?
What needs to remain?
Tell us something about yourself and your work.
Who are you, in this moment in time? Leave a trace for the people of the future who will one day read your words.
Place your message in the time capsule. It will be ceremonially opened on May 1st, 2025.
